About: The Artist

My name is Gary Eitzen, an artist based in Calgary, Alberta.

I came to art later in life after spending more than thirty-five years working in other industries, ranging from oil and gas, quality assurance and environmental monitoring. Since taking my first art course in 2015, I have completed both a BFA and MFA and have developed a multidisciplinary practice that combines sculpture, glass, electronics, light, sound, and found objects.

My primary interest is not glass itself, but storytelling. I am interested in how objects, materials, technology, and memory can be combined to create narratives that encourage reflection and conversation. Many of my larger artistic projects explore themes of relationships, mental illness, human experience, technology, loss, and connection. These works can be viewed through my artistic practice at garyeitzen.com.

Canning Pot Studio serves a different but equally important purpose. The studio was created as a way to reclaim and reuse surplus art glass, transforming it into functional and decorative objects that are accessible to a wider audience. Revenue generated through Canning Pot Studio helps support the development of my larger artistic projects while giving new life to materials that might otherwise go unused.

Whether creating a small illuminated object or a large conceptual installation, my goal remains the same: to create work that tells a story.
