At times I am drawn to working with specific species and colourations of wood in order to construct the layered patterns present within these pieces. Oak, African Padauk, Walnut, Cedar, and Maple each carry distinct tonal qualities, grain structures, and densities that influence both the visual composition and the physical behaviour of the work.
These assemblages are built through an extended process of cutting, gluing, re-cutting, and reassembling — a repetitive cycle of construction and revision. Much of the process is experimental. The intended patterns do not always emerge as expected, and the material often resists the precision I attempt to impose upon it.
I find these works both frustrating and rewarding for that reason.
There is always a degree of uncertainty in how the final surface will resolve itself. Colours shift, grain directions compete, and small variations become amplified through repetition. Yet occasionally the material aligns in unexpected ways, producing moments of depth, rhythm, and structure that feel impossible to fully predict beforehand.
Those moments make the time, labour, and cost worthwhile.
